Children, birth to five years of age, who reside here in Hancock County, can register to have one age-appropriate book mailed to their home every month, at no cost to the family.
family literacy nights
Each year, we hold fun, free literacy nights in our local schools. These events allow children to participate in literacy activities with their adults in a family-friendly enviroment.
parent partner videos
Parent Partner videos are a useful literacy tool to help guide parents and caregivers of young children. We want both parents and children to get the most out of their reading time as possible, while still making reading fun! Each video focuses on a variety of tips for reading with your child. It is never too early to start reading to a child.
The Spelling Bee is our signature event, as well as a fundraiser for the coalition. Teams work together during a 12-round Spelling Bee to spell as many words correctly as they can. The winning team gets a trohpy and bragging rights.
Tell-A-Tale is a creative writing contest, where children in grades kindergarten through fifth grade can submit a short story. All entries are judged prior to a fun awards banquet to honor the writers.
Community Books allows the Literacy Coalition to give books in bulk to local agencies who may see at-risk children come through their doors.
